Each of the 259 trials was generated and verified by a mating solver: the winning line is proven to force checkmate against best defence, and the defence plays at five strength tiers — from casual to grandmaster. No broken puzzles, no “white to move and win” that falls apart after move six.
Treat every trial as a real game: count the material, find the forcing moves, and check the defender’s replies before you commit. Trials start from practical positions — the kind that appear after the midgame when one side has a slight edge — so the patterns you learn transfer directly to your own games.
Stuck? Trials allow retries, and the defending engine shows you the refutation. Many players warm up with two or three Easy trials, then push into Master territory where the winning lines run eight or more moves deep.
Endgame technique is where most amateur xiangqi games are decided. The 259-trial ladder is ordered so that each tier builds on the previous one: first single-piece mates, then two-piece coordination, then full-scale combination attacks with sacrifices. Work through them in order and you will start spotting mating nets in your own online duels within days.
