A gridlocked parking lot, one exit, and a red car that can only move forwards and backwards. Slide the other cars and trucks out of the way — they too only move along their own axis — until the red car can roll out through the gate. This is the “unblock” or Rush-Hour-style sliding puzzle: a handful of rules that generate hundreds of genuinely hard positions.
Our set contains 48 levels with a smooth difficulty curve: every level was generated and verified by a breadth-first solver, so every one is guaranteed solvable, and the labelled minimum move count tells you when you have found the optimal solution.
1. Work backwards from the exit. Ask what must be true one move before the red car escapes, two moves before, and so on — the blocking car you need to move will identify itself. 2. Give trucks room early. Long vehicles need two or three empty cells to be useful; freeing a lane is usually better than shuffling cars one cell at a time. 3. Ignore the cars that never matter. Every level has decoration vehicles that need not move at all; chasing them wastes moves and hides the real bottleneck.
Most stuck positions come from having moved the wrong car “somewhere useful earlier”. When that happens, the hint button shows the solver’s move — and undo is always one tap away.
