What is Klotski (Hua Rong Dao)?

Klotski is a sliding block puzzle famous in China as Hua Rong Dao (华容道) — the mountain trail where, according to Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the defeated warlord Cao Cao escaped after the battle of Red Cliffs. On the board the big 2×2 red block is Cao Cao, surrounded by the five generals who captured him: Guan Yu lying horizontally across the middle gate, and Zhao Yun, Zhang Fei, Ma Chao and Huang Zhong standing guard, with four soldiers filling the gaps.

The goal sounds simple: slide Cao Cao to the gate at the bottom centre. The challenge is that the board is almost full — only two empty squares — so every move must be part of a plan. It is the same family of puzzle as the 15-puzzle and Rush Hour, but with bigger blocks and much deeper solutions.

Three tips that make Klotski solvable

1. Keep the two empty squares adjacent. When the two blanks sit next to each other they behave like one 1×2 domino you can steer anywhere — separated, they can barely move anything. 2. Think in pairs, not pieces. Early progress comes from rotating the four vertical generals into new columns, not from pushing Cao Cao directly. 3. Never push Cao Cao down without a return plan. Every row he gains must be re-earned by re-arranging the pieces above him; the winning line is a choreography of about 80–120 steps, and it is normal to need many attempts on the classic layouts.
