How to solve a jigsaw faster

1. Build the frame first. Pieces with a straight edge belong on the outside — laying those down early gives every later piece a landmark to aim at. 2. Sort by colour and texture, not by shape. Sky pieces, water pieces and building pieces each cluster together, and your eye spots matches far faster than your fingers. 3. Work in small completed clusters. Joining two or three pieces off the frame and then moving the little group into place beats dragging single pieces one by one.

On 3×3 you will finish in a minute or two; 4×4 and 5×5 are the sweet spot for adults; 6×6 with 36 pieces is a genuine evening project. Because your best time is recorded per picture and size, each new attempt is also a race against yourself.
