Three habits that crack the bigger boards

1. Solve the first row and column, then leave them alone. Lock 1, 2, 3 and the tile below 1 into place, and the remaining board shrinks — the same trick repeats as the board gets smaller. 2. Think in cycles, not single tiles. Most progress comes from rotating three tiles around the gap; a move that breaks a solved region to fix two others is usually worth it. 3. Keep the empty slot working for you. Strong players steer the gap deliberately — the tiles only move where the gap goes.

On 3×3 most people finish within minutes; the classic 4×4 is a satisfying coffee-break challenge; 5×5 and 6×6 are where the habit of planning several moves ahead really pays off.
